What is Distributed Generation?

Distributed Generation is:

  • On-site generation usually rated below 20 MW.
  • Utilizes any available technology (solar, wind, biogas, biomass, microturbines, fuel cells, geothermal, water movement, , hydrogen, conventional natural gas technologies)

Why Use Distributed Generation?

Some reasons to use Distributed Generation (DG) are:

  • It's a customer choice issue
  • DG makes the grid more reliable
  • DG can improve power quality
  • DG can be equal to or cleaner than utility plants
  • Slows need for more transmission lines
  • Energy costs are reduced
  • Thomas Edison believed all generation should be distributed
